Weekly Piracy Report
7 to 13 December 2004

The following is a summary of the daily reports broadcast by the IMB’s Piracy Reporting Centre to ships in Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean Regions on the SafetyNET service of Inmarsat-C from 7 to 13 December 2004.

ALERT

Lagos anchorage, Nigeria.

Three attacks have been reported in the past few days at the above location. Attacks occurred whilst ships were at anchor and underway.

Recently reported incidents

13.12.2004 at 0235 LT at Balikpapan anchorage, Indonesia.
A group of robbers armed with daggers, swords and guns boarded a bulk carrier. Ship’s anti-piracy patrol withdrew into accommodation for own safety. Robbers broke open forecastle locker and stole ship’s stores. Master raised alarm and informed port control but received no response.

12.12.2004 at 1031 UTC in posn: 13:33.6N – 048:12.6E, Gulf of Aden.
Pirates in two small boats opened fire on a yacht underway. A helicopter operating from a nearby warship responded yacht’s call for help. Pirates had fired four shots but there were no crew injuries or damage.

11.12.2004 at 1130 LT in posn: 23:06.83N – 068:26.26E, NW coast, India.
A fishing boat approached a supply ship underway and tried to come alongside. Ship altered course and increased speed and boat moved away.

11.12.2004 at 0054 lt at Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
A general cargo ship dropped outward pilot at 0054 lt. Soon after 2/O noticed another pilot boat approaching the stern. Crew rushed aft and found a hook attached to a rope at stern railing. Attempted boarding was averted due to crews’ alertness. Master advised that several private pilot boats operate in the port and one of them may have been involved in attempted illegal boarding. Master informed pilot station and coast guard.

10.12.2004 at 2030 LT in posn: 00:5.27.00S – 103:58.43.00E, Indonesia.
Ten pirates armed with guns boarded a tug towing a barge. They cut off the towing hawser, setting the barge adrift. Pirates hijacked the tug and landed ten crew members at Jambi in Sumatra and sailed away. IMB Piracy Reporting Centre coordinated with the Indonesian navy and the tug was located and detained on 12.12.2004 off Jakarta.

08.12.2004 at 0150 LT at berth no.1, Sandakan, Malaysia.
Two persons wearing boiler suits and helmets similar to the ones worn by crew, attempted to board a bulk carrier via anchor chain. Alert D/O raised alarm and crew mustered. Would be boarders jumped overboard and escaped in a speedboat waiting with two accomplices.

08.12.2004 at 0015 UTC at Dar es Salaam anchorage, Tanzania.
Two robbers armed with knives boarded a container ship and took hostage duty A/B. They stole ship’s property and escaped.

08.12.2004 at Lagos, Nigeria.
Ship’s watchmen onboard a bulk carrier at berth discovered protection bars covering rudder trunk opening had been cut. Same day after departing Lagos two boats each with 7 to 9 men onboard followed the ship prompting master to alter course. Later on boats moved away.
